Empowering Innovation From Within

How StarCompliance Employees Are Shaping the Future of Compliance

At StarCompliance (Star), innovation doesn’t just come from product roadmaps or executive strategies. It starts with our people. That spirit was on full display during our annual hackathon, Hack to the Future, where employees from across the company came together to imagine, build, and pitch AI-powered solutions designed to solve real client challenges.

This year’s theme was about more than just innovation. It was about ownership. Employees were tasked with integrating artificial intelligence (AI) directly into Star’s products, reflecting the industry’s growing shift toward intelligent compliance. The hackathon was an opportunity to align employee creativity with client needs and momentum in the market.

Eleven cross-functional teams from around the globe stepped up to the challenge, delivering solutions that spanned risk detection, workflow automation, personalized dashboards, and data-driven insights. The winning entries exemplified the kind of client-centered thinking that drives our business forward.

Congratulations to UK-based Ethan Cutter, Tim Ensor, and Alex Lumley, who won this year’s hackathon with a forward-looking solution that uses behavioral data such as training, certifications, and actions to generate dynamic employee risk profiles. Their project addressed the challenge of risk-based surveillance with a machine learning–powered scoring model, a cohesive user experience, and a strong visual interface.

This achievement reflects the creativity, technical skill, and strategic thinking that the hackathon was designed to showcase. We’re excited to see where they take this innovation next.

“The quality of all the ideas and execution we saw across the board during Hack to the Future was truly outstanding. It’s a testament to what happens when you empower talented people to think creatively, collaborate deeply, and harness the power of AI. This kind of innovation is exactly what drives us forward as a company and helps us deliver lasting impact for our clients.”  – David Rowland, Chief Technology Officer at Star

According to Gallup’s 2024 State of the Global Workplace, teams in the top group of employee engagement achieve 23 percent higher profitability than those in the bottom group, reinforcing our belief that investing in our people is investing in our future. At Star, we know that innovation thrives when people feel empowered, included, and connected to the company’s success. That’s why we prioritize listening not only to the market and our clients, but also to our employees. Events like Hack to the Future play a vital role in fostering a culture where employees feel valued and engaged. By tapping into their creativity and insights, we’re able to stay ahead of the curve and outperform in the ever-changing arena of regulatory compliance.

Hack to the Future is more than a fun event. It is proof that empowering employees to innovate delivers real value, internally through stronger collaboration and externally through smarter, faster solutions for our clients. It is how we build better products, respond more effectively to evolving needs, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Our latest executive brief, The Intelligence Era: Moving Beyond Automation, is an additional resource regarding the use of AI in compliance. It emphasizes the importance of combining AI with human insight to shape the future of compliance.
