Manual Test Engineer

Location: York, Flexble

Hours: Full Time

Star is a provider of enterprise level financial compliance software. Working as part of an Agile team, you will be involved in the quality assurance aspects of software development. Using your expertise and experience, you will be responsible for creating and executing manual tests to ensure software is delivered to a high standard, is fit for purpose and with minimal defects. Additionally, working in a culture of continual improvement, you will provide guidance on improving the tools, techniques and technologies utilised by the Quality Assurance team.


As part of a technology transformation, Star is undertaking a transition to Microsoft Azure cloud base infrastructure and services. You, as part of the Quality Assurance team, will play a pivotal role in ensuring that the introduction of this technology runs as smoothly as possible.


As the number and size of our products and clients continue to grow, our future testing strategy will be a combination of both manual and automated testing. Consequently, this is an ideal opportunity to gain exposure to automated testing, should you choose to do so.


You will report to the QA lead, and be part of a community of manual and automation testers, while also belonging to a Scrum team.

  • QA process improvement
  • Evaluate, recommend and implement tooling and best practices
  • Lead on improving test coverage and release velocity
  • Ensure testing is completed to a high standard
  • Play a key role in all Agile ceremonies with input into backlog refinement and estimations
  • Look for ways to help and learn from others, whether this be through mentoring, pair programming or other approach to knowledge sharing

Skills or Experience
  • Experience of working in the full Software/Test Development Life Cycle
  • Experience of Agile & Scrum
  • Use of Test & Defect management tools
  • Self-organisation, effective planner and motivated
  • Strong collaborative, interpersonal skills, working with internal technical staff and stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and problem resolution skills
  • Willingness to learn and ability to investigate and evaluate new technologies

Desirable Skills
  • Ideally relevant certifications (ISTQB, Azure, AWS, GCP).
  • Experience with automation testing tools
  • Experience of implementing CI/CD pipelines
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps/Jira would be greatly beneficial
  • Experience defining, implementing or supporting software in financial services industry preferred
